Introduction to project planning, scheduling, and control in the construction industry: theory, concepts, and definitions. The intro also includes the importance of project scheduling (why schedule projects), bar charts, and logic networks. The seminar series covers the steps to create CPM (Critical Path Method) schedules:

  • Breaking down the project into activities. This topic covers the balanced way of breaking the project into controllable and manageable components for effective project control.
  • Estimating activities’ durations. This topic covers methods to estimate or calculate the duration of each activity, including crew production and adjustments. We discuss the difference between activities and events.
  • Defining logical relationships (interdependencies). This topic covers the types of logical relationships among activities, and how to assign such a relationship to reflect real situations. We also cover lags and leads.
  • Draw the network and perform CPM calculations. We discuss the forward and backward passes, assigning an imposed finish date, constraints, calendars, and other important issues. We define the critical path and activities’ float.

Areas Covered

  • Introduction to construction project planning and scheduling including the introduction to bar charts and logic networks.
  • Steps to create a CPM schedule.
  • The concept of CPM scheduling, including forward and backward passes, assigning an imposed finish date. We also discuss constraints and calendars.
  • Explaining activities, events, milestones, lags, leads, constraints, calendars, and more; all in the context of CPM scheduling.
  • Important definitions and general tips.

Course Level - Basic/Fundamental

Who Should Attend

This webinar is important for the entire project management team, particularly project managers, planners and schedulers, project controls managers, cost estimators, and other project management team members.

Why Should You Attend

Creating a CPM (critical path method) schedule is a must for any construction project. In fact, it is required by owners in almost all projects and a requirement for bidding. You must start on the right foot, with a good, accurate, and manageable schedule. The steps and tips provided in these webinars are easy to follow yet will make a major difference in the outcome. An accurate schedule not only will improve your chance of satisfying a bidding requirement but also will help you throughout the project execution. Remember that the schedule is part of the contract document that can be used later in case of a dispute or a claim.

Topic Background

This is a series of 4 seminars, all together describe the steps for creating a CPM schedule for construction projects:

  • Introduction to construction project planning and scheduling including a brief on bar charts and logic networks
  • Breaking down the project into activities
  • Estimating activities’ durations and connecting activities with logic
  • Creating the CPM network and performing the CPM calculations
