Job crafting is a great way to tailor your job as much to your personal preferences as possible. There are five types of job crafting:

  • Task crafting
  • Skill crafting
  • Relationship crafting
  • Well-being crafting
  • Purpose crafting

A simple example of task crafting is the following. Every morning, from 9 to 11 am you block your calendar for meetings because that is the time you want to catch up on emails and your to-do list for the day.

An example of relationship crafting can be that during the next four weeks, you want to have a (virtual) coffee with people from teams other than the team you are in.

While job crafting can be great for employees to make their job more to their liking, and many of us will do it without knowing that what we are doing is job crafting, it may still need some guidance.

Job crafting is about change and change doesn’t always come naturally. It needs discipline and encouragement. This can come from HR, managers, coworkers, and ourselves.

This session touches on job crafting for HR professionals but also on how HR can facilitate job crafting in the organization.
